Lots of Animal Projects

We are deep into our New Hampshire Animal projects!  So far we have painted pictures of NH animals, wrote poems, created mini-habitats, made clay models, and we are in the middle of writing non-fiction books!  Tomorrow we will create New Hampshire animal mobiles.  Students are really becoming experts on their New Hampshire Animals!

Tomorrow is F for Flashlight Day!  Please feel free to send in a flashlight to use during the day.

ABC Countdown

Tomorrow starts our ABC countdown to the end of the year!  Tomorrow is A for Arts and Crafts Day!  We will participate in some great art tomorrow some of which will be focused on our NH animals.  Our 26 letters will take us right to the end of the year.

Today we did our first NH animal project!  We made our animal out of pattern blocks  during math and then graphed how many blocks we used.  You will be able to see our fantastic projects when you visit our classroom during Education Fair on June 1st.

Keep sending in Squam Lake permission forms!  June will be here before we know it!

Thank you!

There are 2 important things coming home today!!

1)  Field Trip Permission form for Squam Lake Science Center trip on 6/8.  We will definitely be looking for chaperones for this trip!  The price for students and chaperones is $8.00.

2)  On May 17th we will begin the ABC countdown for the end of first grade.  Each day will have a special letter themed activity!  Starting with A...  and ending with Z on the last day of school.  This will be a fun way to say goodbye to our year!

Our class is learning about FRACTIONS this week!  Yesterday we began by talking about equal parts.  Today we made "fraction strips" that help us visually see the fractions.  We learned about 1 whole, one half, and one fourth.  Ask your first grader to demonstrate sending something through the "half machine"!

April is almost over...

April has been a busy month for us in team 106!

A few updates:

No homework bags this week.  Homework will continue after vacation.
Today we went to the high school to see the 4th grade production, "We are New Hampshire!" It was great!
We are finishing up and publishing our fiction stories this week.
It is Poetry Week.  We will finish the week with a school-wide "Poem in your Pocket" Day.
Progress Reports will go home on Friday!

We spent this snowy Friday afternoon bringing some spring into our classroom!  We made colorful flowers to replace the snowflakes hanging from our classroom ceiling.  At least it looks like spring inside!!

In folders this afternoon there are 2 permission forms for April.  One is to see the 4th grade dress rehearsal at the high school on the day of the show and the second is to visit the Baker Free Library.  Both of these trips are FREE!  Please sign and return the pink papers as soon as possible!

Thank You

This week...

Officer Mike Carpenter from the Bow Police came to our classroom this morning to discuss our lockdown procedures.  The students asked great questions and learned a lot!

This week in math, we continue to talk about the < and > symbols.

In reading, we are starting to learn words that have vowel teams ('ai' in rain, or 'ay' in say.)  We are also learning about NOUNS this week.  Nouns are words that name a person, place, or thing!
