Classroom Routines & Information

Lunch and Milk
First graders eat lunch at 11:30 each day.  Hot lunch, including a milk, costs $2.25 and children may also buy a milk from the cafeteria for 50 cents to accompany their cold lunch from home.  I would encourage you to take advantage of the school’s prepay lunch account system.  Please visit the  Food Services  webpage for more details on purchasing lunch and milkMoney should be put in a marked envelope or container.  Please include your child’s name and what the money is for on the envelope or container.  A snack milk (white or chocolate) can also be purchased for 50 cents each day and the prepay account can be used for this as well.

Snack
We have a morning snack each day.  Children may purchase a snack milk on that day for 50 cents using the school’s prepay system or money.  Children’s snacks should be nutritious to promote a healthy learning environment. Snacks eaten in our classroom should be peanut free.

Changes in After School Plans                                           If your child is going home differently than he/she usually does, notification is needed.  Use Pick Up Patrol or notify the office.

Recess
We have a morning recess and a lunch recess each day so it is important to dress for the weather.  Appropriate shoes are needed for safety on the playground equipment.

Folders
First grade is a wonderful time for children to develop routines for school.  Each child has a blue home-school folder to travel back and forth between home and school.  As part of our morning routine, children pass in any parent notes or permission slips that come from home.  Helping your child check their folder each day at home is greatly appreciated!  I will also give lots of reminders for children to empty their folders once at school.  If you find that your child is forgetting to empty his or her folder, please just let me know and I would gladly help in establishing this routine.

Homework
In first grade, children should read or be read to at home each day to practice their decoding and comprehension skills.  Children benefit greatly from enjoyable and relaxing read-alouds by family members and from reading themselves.  In October, children will begin taking home books from school to practice with their families.  Children will also have the opportunity to practice sight words and math facts at home.

Our enrichment program, REACH, offers an exciting and fun opportunity for first graders and their families.  Soon weekly B.E.S. Challenges will be sent home.  They are optional activities that can be completed by the child or with the help of a friend or family member.  If your child chooses to do the B.E.S. challenge, they can return it to school by the following Friday.

Birthdays
We celebrate birthdays at school through fun songs and creating a special “birthday book” for each child.  Summer birthdays are celebrated in June.  If you choose to send in a birthday snack...please make sure it is nut-free!  We also encourage healthy snacks to promote a healthy learning environment!
